Habitat gardens are havens for wildlife. Butterflies, bees, and birds… and now our nursery is home to… foxes!
Unlike other foxes, Gray Foxes are a species inbetween feline and canine. Their coats are ‘brindled’ or ‘grayish’ on their back – with a russet belly – and black tipped tail. They have semi-retractable claws (similar to a cat, but not so fully retractable, and unlike a dog) to climb trees and hunt bird eggs and nestlings. Gray foxes also hunt rats, mice, and gophers (yes we’ve noticed less gopher activity at the nursery), and probably also juvenile turkeys. They also eat fruits and berries, as seen in their scat.
